A Bunnings proposal to build a warehouse store in Coolum, Queensland has encountered stiff opposition and some support from that community.

Bunnings has persisted in trying to persuade the community to accept its plans for a store in the area, despite having previous proposals defeated when first raised in 2007.

According to some opponents, Bunnings is unwelcome as the warehouse would result in many smaller local businesses closing. Local planning regulations place an emphasis on maintaining Coolum as a "village"-like environment.

Supporters cite the convenience of shopping at a Bunnings, and the current need to travel long distances to find equivalent retailers.

Given the near certainty that the proposal will be rejected, some have speculated that the true purpose of the proposal is to establish firm grounds of rejection, and thus ensure that the major Bunnings competitor, Woolworths' Masters, would also be rejected if it proposed a development.
